May 6, 2006 Heather Labance and Team Advil – ChapStick continued their winning ways this past weekend with a strong win at the 23rd annual Jiminy Peak Road Race in Hancock, MA. Advil – ChapStick controlled the race from the start, riding at the front of the peloton setting the tempo and trying stay out of trouble in the field of 120 riders. The first 25 km were fairly uneventful, but that changed quickly when a crash halfway through the race took out about 20 riders, including Advil – ChapStick's Julie Reid, and leaving the large field split into 3 groups. The two chase groups caught the lead group with about 20 km to go, and things stayed that way for the next 14 km. The action heated up with 6 km to go, when Advil – ChapStick's newest addition to the team, Elisa Gagnon, put in a strong attack. She was followed by Lipton's Katie Lambden, who quickly decided to attack her breakaway partner. The experienced Gagnon smartly drifted back to the group and attacked again, this time launching Advil – ChapStick leader Heather Labance. Labance, who was being watched closely by everyone in the group, quickly caught and rode away from Lamden with 4 km to go and hit the final 1.5 km climb to the finish with a 30 second gap over the field of chasers. By the finish, Labance still had her 30 second gap as well as her second win in as many weeks. Bill Labance |
